The field of producing chemicals from petroleum as raw material. Broadly speaking, it also includes natural gas chemical industry. Petrochemical industry emerged in the 1920s with the development of petroleum refining industry and grew during World War II. After the war, with the extraction of a large amount of cheap oil, the petrochemical industry developed rapidly, shifting the production of a large number of chemicals from traditional coal and agricultural products as raw materials to petroleum and natural gas as raw materials.
